Next……Features: How Station 20 West stands out

Contaminated wasteland transformed into an environmental showcase.

Station 20 West goes green

Special features related to environmental sustainability The building is planned to dramatically reduce the use of water and energy both during construction and once the building is in operation. A high level of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification is anticipated. The following is a basic list of a few of the important features:

1. Much higher levels of insulation (R-40 walls and R-60 Roof)

2. High quality triple glazed, operable windows

3. Heat pumps designed to integrate the building heating and food cooling requirements

4. Ground Source heating and cooling loops tied to radiant heating and cooling systems

5. Heat reclaim and energy transfer for all exhaust air and hot water

6. Natural ventilation through the use of a solar chimney

7. Maximum use of natural lighting through window placement and light sensor switches

8. Solar panels for hot water heat and energy transfer

9. Secure bicycle storage for staff and volunteers

10. Retention of Rainwater on site for cooling, irrigation and operation of toilets

Polished and stained concrete floors inside building make for ease of maintenance, less use of carpets and other materials

Asphalt will be permeable to ground water to minimize run-off

My girls and I used to walk all the way from Avenue M to Confederation… then to the grocery store and all the way home. I’m very glad to see what is happening to our neighbourhood.
